What documents do I need to provide?
You can verify your identity with one of the following:
- a valid New Zealand driver licence, or
- a valid New Zealand passport, or
- A certified copy of an overseas passport
In most cases, we’ll verify your identity electronically with no extra documents. If we’re unable to do so, we may ask you to provide certified documents instead. These may include:
- a certified copy of your New Zealand or overseas passport or New Zealand driver licence
- additional documents if required to meet regulatory obligations
If this is required, we’ll guide you through how to upload your certified documents.
Can I use an overseas passport?
Yes, however you’ll need to upload a certified copy of your overseas passport.
If you need help, reach out to our support team and we’ll guide you through the process.
How does identity verification work?
We use a combination of electronic identity verification (EIV), linking measures and biometric checks to confirm your identity.
This may include:
- Matching your personal details against trusted data sources (e.g. government and credit databases)
- Verifying your ID document (passport or driver licence)
- Matching the name of your deposits to the name on your bank account
- Taking a selfie or short video to confirm that you are the person in your ID
Biometric checks help us securely match your face to your ID and confirm your identity.
Most verifications are completed within minutes, however additional checks or manual reviews may take longer.
Why does Stake use biometrics?
We use biometric checks to confirm it’s really you and help protect your account from fraud or identity misuse.
This involves capturing a selfie or short video and matching it to your photo ID (such as your passport or driver licence).
We use a secure verification partner to carry out this process. Your biometric data is only used for identity verification and handled in line with privacy requirements.
What should I do if my biometric check fails?
If you’re running into issues, try the following:
- Use your phone since mobile cameras usually work best
- Place your ID on a flat surface and ensure the image is clear and not obstructed by glare or fingers
- Take your selfie in a well-lit area with a plain background
- Try a different form of ID (e.g. a New Zealand passport instead of driver licence).
If you’re still having trouble, reach out to our support team and we’ll help you get sorted.
What happens if I can’t be verified digitally?
If we’re unable to verify your identity electronically, we may ask you to complete a documentary (non-digital) verification process.
This can include providing one or a combination of the following:
- a certified copy of your New Zealand or overseas passport, or New Zealand driver licence
- proof of address (e.g. bank statement or utility bill)
- other documents required under New Zealand AML/CFT regulations
This may take longer than our digital process, however it ensures we can verify your identity in line with regulatory requirements.
