How to certify an ID document?
A certified copy is a copy of your ID that an approved person (a "trusted referee") has confirmed is a true copy of the original.
Step-by-step:
- Take both your original document and a photocopy to a trusted referee
- The referee compares the copy to the original and signs the copy
- Upload the certified copy when prompted in-app
If you're living overseas, you can have your documents certified in your current country.
Certification requirements:
- The certification must be within 3 months of submission
- It must include the referee's full name, signature, date, and position
Approved trusted referees:
- Justice of the Peace
- Registered Medical Doctor
- Lawyer
- Notary public
- New Zealand Honorary consul
- Member of Parliament
- Chartered Accountant
- A person authorised by law to take statutory declarations or the equivalent in their overseas country (for overseas certification).
The referee cannot be:
- Under 16 years old
- Related to you
- A spouse or partner of the individual.
- Living at the same address as you
- Involved in the transaction or business requiring certification
Required certification wording:
- For documents with a photo: “I certify that this is a true copy of the original document, which I have sighted, and the photo represents a true likeness of the person presenting the document.”
- For documents without a photo: “I certify that this is a true copy of the original document, which I have sighted.”
Once uploaded, we'll let you know when your documents have been verified or if we need more information.
If you need help, our support team can guide you through the process.
